My heart is bursting. On the eve of my first child's birth, my dad - who's been in prison nearly my entire life - was granted clemency. He never intended harm, yet his crime devastated many families. My heart breaks for the families that can never get their loved ones back.

If prison is “rehabilitation” as so many like to call it then why wouldn’t anyone be happy for him to be leaving now? People would rather punish each other into oblivion than try to love them beyond their faults.

It isn't. Prison cannot rehabilitate anyone; nothing external can. Only the prisoner can rehabilitate himself. The reason you lock up murderers for life is to prevent blood feuds.

But he wasn’t locked up for life? A jury of his peers decided not to do that, then he was pardoned because he was no longer deemed a threat? When do we stop punishing people?

A jury of his peers decided to lock him up for 75 to life. A disgraced politician decided to help his political ally giving him the opportunity to seek parole. He was not pardoned.

I’ll ask again…when do we stop punishing people?
