I'm going into this weekend resolved and committed to tackling the opioid crisis. I flew home to Hawaiʻi after introducing the Opioid Crisis Accountability Act, the companion bill to @BernieSanders' opioid bill. It’s time to end the opioid crisis—here’s how we’re going to do it:

Prohibit and penalize the false marketing and distribution of opioids. Companies like Purdue Pharma, the makers of OxyContin, knew about the dangerous and addictive nature of their drugs but did nothing to inform doctors, pharmacists, or the public.

Hold top company executives criminally liable for the crisis. This isn’t about escalating the so-called “War on Drugs.” It’s about restoring justice to a criminal justice system that has been out of whack punishing the wrong people for generations.

Have drug companies reimburse the cost of the crisis—$78 billion a year, according to the CDC. Multi-billion dollar profits from a prescription drug trade that results in death and human suffering should be appropriated to solve the crisis they helped create.

We can create the momentum needed to bring this tragic, expensive, and deadly opioid crisis to a halt, but we need everyone's support. Call, text, tweet—do whatever it takes to get the word out. Big Pharma is going to come at us with everything they’ve got—we need to fight back.

Thank you! I often wonder why POC with small amounts of drugs go to jail, while the Sackler roam free.

I’m glad you’re finally work with Trump’s initiative to end opiod abuse - but what about meth? It’s a bigger problem than prescription meds.

Not so sure about this, but if so, can we have companies that build mines and missiles pay for the reconstruction of countries destroyed by them? Including removing dead bodies from the rubble? And demining the countryside?

Cannabis decriminalization is also necessary. This will address the opioid crisis AND the criminal Injustice system. States with legal Cannabis, like yours, have seen a 23% reduction in opioid overdoses. States like IN where it's illegal, have way more opioid abuse.

There’s one problem. It took 30 days for healthcare professionals to realize the drugs were addicting, yet they kept prescribing them. How do you blame Big Pharma for decades of prescribers turning a blind eye to the problem?
