In recent months, and particularly following the false missile alert in Hawaiʻi earlier this year, the rest of the country has begun to understand the reality that the people of Hawaiʻi have known all too well for far too long.

Just this morning, direct talks between North & South Korea indicated that with U.S. participation, we can achieve the following: -Nuclear disarmament on the Korean Peninsula -Normalizing relations between the U.S. & North Korea -Suspension of nuclear and ballistic missile tests

South Korea’s national security chief said, “North Korea has no reason to possess nuclear weapons when military threats are resolved, and when North Korea’s regime is guaranteed.”

This is an affirmation of the diplomatic progress we can make towards peace when we are willing to directly negotiate without preconditions, do not pursue counterproductive regime change policies, and instead focus on how we can achieve peace.

Military leaders have spelled out in detail how a war with North Korea would be catastrophic. Today’s news should give us hope that peace is possible.

We must act now - President Trump must engage in talks directly with Kim Jong Un, and begin the negotiations that can lead us down a peaceful path toward eliminating this nuclear threat from North Korea.
