I've heard from some of our local Hawaii surf champions, & they're frustrated, don't understand why this is even an issue. If these world-class surf contests are cancelled in Hawaii, esp on the eve of surfing's debut in the Olympics, then our state, community, & surfers lose.
They're not asking to switch the dates. They want to switch around the contests in the dates that they already applied for permits for.
Shows a total lack of understanding of the sport and the economy...
