Imagine a world where: 1) A prison “industry” exists 2) This “industry” is considered a legitimate investment 3) The “industry” bribes government to expand criminalization and support mass incarceration for their profit Now imagine that you’re living in it, then stop imagining.

In the last election cycle, Marco Rubio was the top recipient of campaign contributions from the for profit prison industry. Is that why he’s “tough on crime”?pic.twitter.com/1nukiMzK4X

Any industry that makes a profit from criminal behavior is complicit in that criminal behavior. For Profit Prisons are criminal by their very nature. It’s impossible to have a system that is Just when profit of any kind is involved.

The 13th Amendment "exception clause" enslaves anyone convicted of a crime. The state, local & federal govts then pay pvt prison corps to run the slave labor camps - called "private prisons" - to manufacture for the military & corporations, and perform tasks like fighting fires.

Along with following the “Innocence Project”, so many are wrongfully convicted so this adds to that potential police contact that can land you in for nothing only because they can profit throughout the justice system!!

Non-violent criminals should not be in prison. Ankle bracelet, restitution paid as a loan to the convict, job training, some FDR style work projects available (national park maintenance?). Would all that be any more expensive than incarceration?

I think that's an amazing idea. Non violent criminals could be used elsewhere in society and for profit prison could be eliminated and the prisons will be owned by the states and that way the states will save money from taxpayers by using them to work in different jobs.

and the talking must end bc it has gone on far too long, decades, centuries now. Do that, and we can better get to diversity acceptance in the bigots who teach children. We can take justice from the streets into the court rooms in fairness & equality, but not without actions.

WE are. You included. We have to be the change we wish to see. Grow some flowers, give them to someone who needs them. Keep an eye on chess master Bernie, and prepare to fight the corporate press, the most powerful allies of the Democrats who are weak, ripe for takeover.

The sad part is that private prisons love non violent drug offenders. They're the easiest to manage, therefore they make the most profit per inmate. The result is GEO group buying politicians like Sessions to ensure a steady supply.
