#TaxScam Fact of the Day: Teachers' deductions for out of pocket expenses are eliminated, making teachers choose between buying students the supplies they need or supplementing their already meager take-home pay.

In an already despicable tax bill, the elimination of the deduction for teacher's purchase of school expenses is downright cruel. This entire bill is an offence to the people and the principals of this country. House representatives who voted for this bill need to be VOTED OUT!

What do you define as "meager"? I did payroll for a school. Not sure about "meager", but agree they should not have to pay for supplies.

Put this in a larger context. Many people with good incomes will need a 2nd job to make up for all the eliminated deductions. Eliminate the mortgage deduction? Home values will drop

We should keep the deductions but it is sad that any teacher in this country needs to pay out of pocket for supplies. We can do better.

Myth. Comparitively speaking Teachers are overpaid. And our kids do not get what they deserve because of NEA and state unions power. Results speak for themselves. We've overspent on delivery method and under spent on concepts.

To be perfectly honest, the whole idea of public school teachers having to purchase supplies for their students is PREPOSTEROUS. The solution is not really to maintain the income tax-deductibility of such expenses, but to eliminate the need for such expenses in the first place.

Deductions in their pay bracket were largely symbolic as a standard deduction is generally more beneficial. Even married.

And that deduction was a joke to begin with! I left teaching because of the amount if money coming out of my own picket far exceeded $500!!

It’s only because of your failing education system that teachers are expected to pay for supplies out of their own pockets. I guess that’s the price they pay for their fat retirements. #vouchers
