The idea of a self-regulating major market is one of the biggest myths in economics. It is even more untrue in industries where businesses have virtual monopolies. Goods and services need to be regulated. Recent and remote history proves it.

Actually markets do regulate themselves... after thousands get sick and die and businesses are threatened by lawsuits that finally begin to outweigh the cost savings from lack of inspections.

This Capitalism at the best. Greed over growth. And a need of separation of government interests and of corporate interest. And in fact, an imposition of social interest on the corporate activities. Thus, control, planning, etc.

Yeah, let's go back before the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act when we all had the freedom to die of botulism. The meat industry was hurting without independent credibility. That's why it passed.

Outbreaks have occurred with angelic regulators in place: https://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/outbreaks.html … and FDA is still in business. I'd imagine outbreaks would still occur with evil businesses regulating but how long would they stay in business?

In every case where veggies we're contaminated, the cause was a neighboring animal farm. We're doomed if we let this self inspection happen

Didn't we just have an e coli outbreak a few months ago with lettuce? Will "libertarians" finally learn that if you cut regulations, big corporations will not hesitat to cut corners and risk our lives for profit? Because that's what's happening.

I'm more concerned that my local hospital E.R. won't be able to treat my food poisoning because they are being driven out of business having to cover uninsured illegals. Our border in Texas worries me far more than catching a bad sausage McMuffin.
