High cost of living is a unique feature of Democrat run places, including Hawaii. The costs come from government: high taxes (including real estate), fees and excessive regulations (increasing cost of everything, mostly housing). But, I guess it is election year...

It is a complex problem, but the reality is that companies that are raking in massive profits need to pay their workers a living wage.

Wouldn't raising the minimum wage end up resetting the cost to reflect the higher wage? Then wouldn't people need to get multiple jobs again to pay for the new high costs? Sounds like we need to find another solution.
-
Nope. That's not what happens.

I am sick and tired of the laissez-faire capitalist lies spread about —gasp!— "socialism." Social democracies do NOT aim to give everyone equal pieces of the pie, they simply purport that anyone working a full-time job should receive a LIVING wage in their particular community.

Yeah Tusi. Everybody should get high wages, free education, free medical, free housing. I vote for a minimum wage of $100/hr even if you are unskilled. How about a minimum wage even if you don’t work. Let’s open our borders and let everybody get everything for free.
-
She never said anything about free. People who work full time should be able to pay for their house, food and education, don't you think? Wouldn't you rather corporations pay their workers instead of making tax payers subsidize their absurdly low wages?

I agree w Tulsi! One shouldn't have to struggle working a 40hr/ wk job. Why are some so quick to anger over others wanting a liveable wage when they should be angry @ corporations taking more and more-rising tuition costs, high credit card interest rates, expensive housing etc..

Fortunately more and more leaders, like Tulsi, are PAC free and refuse to take any money other than individual leaders. We need to stay positive and work towards the goal of real change!

With 3.7% unemployment and 7 million job openings employers will start to BID UP WAGES. UNLESS you flood the country with aliens. Then wages will remain low. Democrats and leftists ARE the problems they decry.
-
Employers will do whatever they can get away with, as they've shown. Wages are artificially low because tax payers are forced to subsidize corporations' low pay in the form of food stamps, WIC, Headstart and other necessities people could pay for themselves if they earned enough.

Yes raise the minimum wage. It’s $15/hr where I live but some costs will go up and some jobs will be lost. Gigantic problem is lack of supply on an island and huge demand due to weather and location. Can’t change that and it will only get worse as the population keeps growing.

Actually life did work that way for quite a while - where people could work one full time job and own a house, educate their children, take vacations, etc. That was when the income disparity wasn't so absurdly large thanks to laws and tax subsidies that favor the ultra rich.
