.@GovHawaii vetoed SB2407 which would've allowed Hawaii patients to use medical marijuana to treat opioid addiction - a shocking decision given there are 191 drug-related deaths per year and almost 500,000 active opioid prescriptions in Hawai'i.http://m.hawaiinewsnow.com/hawaiinewsnow/db_352775/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=gn06QRe8 …

Gov Ige vetoed the bill saying people need to go thru bureaucratic red-tape & apply for approval from HI Dept of Health instead - knowing DOH won't approve because they don't think there's evidence that medical marijuana can effectively help those suffering from opioid addiction.

But multiple studies and statistics show that in states where medical marijuana is legal, there have been significant decreases in opioid addiction and opioid-related deaths.https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/02/health/medical-cannabis-law-opioid-prescription-study/index.html …

It's too late for the State Legislature to call a special session to override the Governor's veto. The people of Hawaii are forced to wait another year for the possibility of relief. Gov Ige's veto will undoubtedly lead to more opioid-related addiction & death in our state.

Yet another reason I'm supporting @ColleenHanabusa for Governor. Hawaii needs bold leadership at the helm of our state. Colleen is a co-sponsor of my bill HR1227 to end the Federal Marijuana Prohibition. As Governor, she would've signed this bill into law.

Replying to @TulsiGabbard
Do we know for a fact that
@RepHanabusa would have supported this? I’ve learned first-hand the benefits of marijuana for cancer patients. If Hanabusa does support marijuana use for medical patients, LGBT causes, and financial relief for hardworking locals then I’ll support her1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes
Yes. Colleen and I put out an official statement weeks ago urging Governor Ige to sign this bill into law (https://hanabusa.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congresswomen-hanabusa-and-gabbard-oppose-governor-ige-s-intent-veto …). She is a co-sponsor of my bill, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act.
