the IBM 23FD "Minnow" (pictured), generally credited as the first floppy drive, didn't come out until 1971, more than 10 years later!pic.twitter.com/4PRl1UZHfd
so what is the difference between a floppy and a bernoulli disk? the floppy disk drive head makes full contact with the flexible disk material. single-sided drives have a little pad that pushes the disk up against the read/write head.pic.twitter.com/1v1m0PfTw0
bernoulli drives have a metal plate (the bernoulli plate) that the flexible disk spins against. the spinning action creates an air cushion so that there's no direct contact between the disk and the head (although the gap is extremely small!)pic.twitter.com/TNk0hgnnrh
having the gap is critical since it allows a bernoulli drive to run at 2000 RPM instead of 300 RPM. a regular floppy drive run at those speeds would wear out very quickly, but the high speed dramatically increases the data throughput.
some specs of the original LFE BD-103 drive: capacity: 100,000 bits across 40 tracks speed: 3600RPM disk: 7.5" diameter, 2 mil thick mylar head float distance: 0.75 mil price: $4000 (about $35K in today's dollars)
H/T to @bitsavers for letting me know about this drive. the brochure is available from http://bitsavers.org/pdf/lfe/LFE_BD-100_Bernoulli_Disk_Brochure_Apr1960.pdf …
the (perhaps slightly earlier?) LFE BD-100 could store 100 kilobits of data! via https://books.google.com/books?id=sThnMsd97P8C&pg=PA116&lpg=PA116&dq=lfe+bernoulli&source=bl&ots=QDDTpJ69kw&sig=ACfU3U3c69pgwQU_0396c8aFgFE3GLFHTg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjez_S9gaDnAhXVVs0KHez3DYkQ6AEwA3oECAsQAQ#v=onepage&q=lfe%20bernoulli&f=false …pic.twitter.com/MYLHSXLs1K
Holy shit! Did these really exist or was it just marketing? That thing must’ve weighed a ton despite looking like some sort of cat box.
It looks like you can play your Frankie Avalon 45s on it.
