you might also notice that there are 3 power wires but only 1 ground wire. the power ground current is shared with the outer shield conductor!
the greyish material in between the wires is just superglue to hold things in place for sectioning. it's not in the original cable.

It's amazing how perfectly bunched those coax centers are in something as mundane as a consumer-grade USB cable.
..granted, this one looks like it was assembled with a lot more care than the first one you sectioned!
