I was under the impression RF travels in the dielectric space between the core and shield, due to how the skin effect works.
the current passes along the surface of the core in one direction and the inner surface of the foil coming back the other way. there's no current flowing in the dielectric because it's an insulator.
I'm surprised the center conductor is solid copper. Most these days are copper plated steel. Skin effect and all that...
I suppose if it's also carying power? (Or it's vintage?)
