the sleeves start out with one slug already installed. these all go into special trays. the diode chips are dumped across the tray which is then vibrated at a very specific frequency, causing the diodes to land dot side up!

Can understand your reluctance in cutting into ceramic. A lot of it is Beryllium oxide , the dust of which is a carcinogen, it is normally pink but some of it is white. Used mainly for its high thermal conductivity on RF power Transistors and some tube envelopes.
