me too, i expected them to be 'transverse' mounted to maximize spark gap, minimize capacitance and all that. I'd love to know why this arrangement

So it literally is similar to a TV remote and receiver - I just never thought that it would look like it. I knew that there was separation but it just seems odd seeing it.
