On January 30th, we celebrate Fred Korematsu's legacy of defiance and as a civil rights activist. As the US government continues to target and imprison communities of color, remembering Korematsu's resistance is more important than ever. #FredKorematsuDaypic.twitter.com/HAlaG4E5AH

On this day in 1919, Korematsu was born in Oakland, CA, to Japanese immigrants. When WWII began, Korematsu tried to enlist in the National Guard & Coast Guard, but was denied due to his Japanese ancestry. He then worked as a shipyard welder - until being fired for his ancestry.pic.twitter.com/b5ptgFS60a

In 1942, at the age of 23, Korematsu was one of 120,000 people of Japanese descent ordered by the U.S. government through #ExecutiveOrder9066 to leave behind their homes to be incarcerated in U.S. concentration camps.pic.twitter.com/JoEhZ9bokP

Fred Korematsu defied the U.S. government’s order and attempted to carry on his life as an American citizen. Within months, Korematsu was arrested and convicted for defying the order. But, believing his conviction was unconstitutional, he appealed his case to the Supreme Court.pic.twitter.com/I3GPg2yTVU

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled against Fred Korematsu, declaring that the incarceration of Japanese Americans was not based on race - and accepted the U.S. military's argument that separating "the disloyal from the loyal" was impossible.pic.twitter.com/hxk17o31JD

Following WWII and the release of Japanese Americans from the US concentration camps in 1944, Korematsu attempted to resume life as an American citizen but his conviction had a lasting impact on his basic rights - affecting his ability to obtain employment.pic.twitter.com/r7Y9dRF8uA

In 1980, researchers found documents revealing that the FBI & other intelligence agencies had denied that Japanese Americans had committed any wrongdoing. These official reports were never presented to the Supreme Court & instead were intentionally kept from the public.

On the basis of government misconduct, Korematsu’s case was reopened. The US government offered a pardon to Korematsu if he dropped his lawsuit. He rejected the offer, believing that the government should instead seek a pardon from him and from the Japanese American community.

"Being an American citizen was not enough. They say you have to look like one... I'd like to see the govt admit that they were wrong & do something about it so this will never happen again to any American citizen of any race, creed or color." - Korematsu, 1983

In 1983, Korematsu’s conviction for defying incarceration was formally overturned by Judge Patel of the U.S. District Court of Northern CA. This was a pivotal moment in U.S. civil rights history! However, it should be noted that the Supreme Court's 1944 ruling still stood.pic.twitter.com/BMKHSqkX2V

Until he passed in 2005, Korematsu spoke out against discrimination in the name of national security following 9/11. He filed two briefs emphasizing that the targeting of Muslim Americans was reminiscent of the past and warned the govt against repeating their mistakes.
