This would be a PRIME opportunity for her to reassert herself & get that story resolved. It was ignored in Legion, but Sylvanas wasn't the only 1 that wanted Malfurion dead. I could definitely see Maiev blaming the loss of Teldrassil on Tyrande and Malfurion.

Why would a mass-murder and burning a sacred place of the enemy create 'a split'?
Because Maiev has always hated how Tyrande and Malfurion have lead the Night Elves. She has actively tried to kill Malfurion in the past. The loss of Teldrassil could provide her another opportunity to push other Night Elves to her cause and try to kill Mal or Tyrande again.
Oh wow....that's good to know. I didn't realize it had eliminated that much of the Night Elf population. I'm looking forward to being able to dive more into those two novellas. At this rate, is there any Azeroth race with a healthy populace?? :D
