Academic biology labs are substantial businesses, with many of the same issues as (e.g.) tech startups, but the management structure is archaic, and works only if a good scientist spends all their time being a good manager instead. Rare combination,

“The Gell-Mann amnesia effect, but for science”: I figured out decades ago that, in the somewhat odd fields I know well, _Science_ publishes flashy garbage that appeals to outsiders for superficial reasons. They do need to appeal to stuff that's in-field. But it's all about that impact factor. If they publish 1 study that get 10000 citations and 9 studies that get retracted 6 months later that's a win for them.
