If we're applying Occam's Razor in good faith, "don't give a shit" trumps most other psychological explanations most of the time.
Most social taboos are only established and maintained through training & reinforcement.
Go to a different country. Do something you consider normal, notice the locals freak out.
Stay home. Notice how foreigners are always doing senseless things. They don't share your bubble.
