Most social taboos are only established and maintained through training & reinforcement.
Go to a different country. Do something you consider normal, notice the locals freak out.
Stay home. Notice how foreigners are always doing senseless things. They don't share your bubble.

I'd consider it amazingly stupid how people so frequently miss such an obvious thing.
But then, they don't share *my* bubble, so no wonder.
