Somewhat irritated by the inability of the senses to find a self.

Hey, it's really easy to find a self if you just listen for the little voice that starts every sentence with "I am"!
... coffee. I need coffee.

Seriously, though: I've noticed people will frequently give answers drawing on that when you ask them if they can identify any self "Of course, I am (insert role)"!
It's something of a semantic leap to use the specific sense we're operating under.

it's a fairly big leap to realize that you can't find what you're referring to. And then grinding it in is further. I still identify with various sense-objects, even though I know that's ridiculous.
It's mostly about hedonics - pleasure and suffering.

Indeed, and I'm finding that you don't even need to identify with the craving in order to feel compelled by it. It is enough that it's there - then all sorts of subtle little selves form in the periphery.

(But maybe that's what you meant? I have hit the quadruple downer of sleep deprivation, caffeine withdrawal, dehydration and dipping blood sugar, so I'm a bit woozy.)
