Many years ago, I attended a wedding in the midwestern US.
I made a self-deprecating joke about the size of a body part.
One fellow was very surprised, and said "Wait... you just made a joke about yourself."

One of our former neighbors would hurl invective from his window every time someone parked outside his door, insulting their driving skills, sense of propriety, intelligence, car... he didn't take it very well to be addressed without "sir", which he was always careful to include.
