"I don't want fiction to be petty validation fantasies. Now that I'm an adult and have been utterly broken, I only want the meanest, grittiest stories, populated only by monsters and losers. Why are you smiling?"

I went thru a period in my 20s where I read gritty. Now I don't, mostly, because yeah, I've been broken a couple times. I don't need to read gritty, I live that shit. (Nor do I need to read existential despair, I can have as much of that as I want, whenever I want.)

Got tired of it. I think I broke completely on a certain style when I read a fantasy novel which starts with the hero (and the author definitely presented him as a hero, if a dark one) was torturing because he wanted information on an item for his hobby. Uhhh

Style is one thing, the weird pathology evident in many writers another - but I can understand your aversion. I can't watch comedy shows because I am tired of Overtly Narcissistic Protagonist being presented as sympathetic. It's as with Woody Allen films and paedophilia.
