The next 50 years will see if we can live through another period of war and revolution comparable in scale to (e.g.) 1914-1945, but with nukes, robots, and biological weapons, all against a background of increasingly dire climate change.

I doubt I'll ever get through to your level, since I'm not really trying at all right now :). Though I'm usually pretty calm about this stuff. Just hits me every now and then for a few minutes as I read about world events, etc.

It ain't some level or attainment - just a mode of functioning like any other.
It's not even always optimal: I sometimes worry that I'm too detached, for a householder.
But right now, I'm damn glad I'm not freaking out all the time. Because I could be.

Well, maybe it is an attainment. But I'm rather reluctant to think that way about it, for Reasons.
When I get really angry or scared, I usually try to work it out of my system - physically. Helps me get things done, something I'm usually bad at. Family makes it harder, though.
