It seems to be very frequently understood in ways that are inherently self-contradictory and problematic (and not just "from a dualistic perspective").
But, those are not the only possible interpretations. I tend to agree with you that the concept can be helpful. It depends.
Like Kenneth, I have my fair share of things taught in Buddhism and other traditions that I think are BS - but often it's the common teaching of the concept, moreso than the concept itself, that is the problem.
