Yes, I understand there are ways to get dogs socialized with domesticated prey animals, but neither me nor the wife are natural dog owners - we were seduced by the poor, loving soul while we kept her for an animal activist friend - so we've avoided complex training, for now.

Considering we already have our hands full getting our two-year old to understand that no, hitting the dog and pulling at its fur or yelling in its face is not "playing", this is probably the right choice.
