If I were 18 today, I think it's likely I'd go into ecology/biology.

As someone who had the same thoughts...my experience has been that academic pursuit of ecology forces you into specialization and out of systems-level thinking. If I had to restart my PhD, I'd go into geography.

Ah yes. The question is how to find the discipline that lets you study what you actually want to.
Many years ago an advisor reccomended criminology to me for masters. I have 0 interest, she said "doesn't matter, you can do what you want there."
