My experience has been the complete opposite. Not once have I been told or hinted to work outside of work hours.
That's pure avarice on your employer's part. Reading and writing documentation is an essential task for most tech-related jobs.

My employer is not too bad.
Some of their lower level management, on the other hand, have slightly skewed perceptions of reality.
I'm forced to remind my wife about this quite often. Me, I'd log taking a shit as work if it happened during work hours. And I do.
