Every time I see someone write something like "I never understood the problem of poverty until I *insert sob story about living poor for a while*," I can't help but think it's so kind of the narcissists to identify themselves for the rest of us. :)

In comparing ourselves with others ("thought I knew pain") we're susceptible to motivated reasoning and fundamental attribution error, for all sorts of ego-serving reasons. Happens to everyone, but for certain issues you'd have to be quite narcissistic not to understand.

Most of us can understand why a person might be depressed and demotivated if they end up unemployed and on the street, or if a loved one dies. A narcissist can't, won't and would have no interest even if they could. Unless it was about them. Then they'd care. A lot.
