Starting to think the whole thing certain meditators go on about with the self - it's a "crutch", an "anchor" or whatever - is not too far wrong.

None. I can do this at will using a few tricks. I can close my eyes and stop modelling the room around me as space, or try to look beyond the horizon of the visual field. I do that, I abruptly lose the sense of self or vantage for a while. I'm a person only in abstract.

Sometimes it happens for long periods after meditation, other times it happens without prompting or from associative memory. I have it just now because we're talking about it.
