Humans are wired to have roles in a society; we can't be everything to everyone at all times. Even if we realize internally that we are not our role, we are still happier having one. Still gotta chop wood, carry water. Might as well get good at it.

The real insidious part is that if we lack explicitly defined roles, we tend to seek out more subtle ones to inhabit - often without realizing it.
