A downside of being so adaptable as a species, is we don't seem to do a good job of differentiating quality of life from the situation we're in. We just sort of plod on anyway.

This gets even more extreme if you are quite emotionally resilient, but not necessarily that great at fixing your practical issues - stuff you shouldn't have to endure just accumulates on your shoulders.

The upside to any kind of detachment from your immediate experience, whatever the reason for having it, is that you don't end up clinging to the bad stuff.

Once a burden is off your shoulders, there is no reason to hold on to it in your thoughts and feelings if you don't feel the need to process it further or need to interact with it somehow.
