For every satanic cult, paedophile ring et cetera, there are 1000s of families that routinely abuse their kids and take away their autonomy.

Those kids, once so deprived, make pliable targets for grooming paedophiles and other predators. Often the predator is in the family, too.

Child abuse (not only sexual) is usually chronic, and predicated on the child lacking reliable caretakers.

Every parent who belittles or refuses to believe their child, or refuses to address patterns of abuse in their family, is culpable.

The parents who contrive to see themselves as victims of their own children ("this lying brat") are also the sorts to blame boogeymen.

Of course it's convenient to blame politicians, the Church, cults, capitalism... But chances are, they just didn't care to pay attention.

Individually, many of these parents were abused; hence the apathy. But fuck the ethics of letting what was done to you be done to others.
