smart people get a lot of positive conditioning in schooling, where they get rewarded for being "right", they don't like admitting error.

That kind of conditioning is endemic outside of school too. Took me forever to get the whole "I am not my intellect" thing fully realized.
And I categorically refused to take school, and by extension most teachers' opinions of me, grades etc. in any way seriously.
