This friend wasn't even the best or wisest teacher around, but he was someone who gave a shit and had lived very much his own life.

And, unlike my father, lived with constant threats of and enactments of violence for much of his childhood. Much firmer grip on that stuff.

Though I suspect I've been better saddled with my biological father for 95% of issues, those remaining 5% were a real kicker. Minority rule.
