That's the first step. Once seen as sensations, thoughts eventually grow quiescent. Triggered sometimes by association, then quickly gone.

Thought-as-sensation injects a new signal into the loop, disrupts it. Funny thing is you can often feel the trigger that amplifies the loop.

Thought triggers bellyaching anxiety (oft perceived as thought) triggers reflexive self-judgement (tightening of facial muscles) triggers...
