I mostly hear it mentioned as a way to deal w/extreme post-awakening mood swings. Therapy isn't possible right now, so I'm short on options.

Ah. Maybe. I'd tend to think it would make them worse, because the world is in a shit state right now. What does think about it?

already told me to do it at least twice. Think it was mostly meant to help me not be so harsh on myself, if I understood him.

I begin to feel like a parrot these days with regards to advice on the book "the mind illuminated". Btw, I have not done metta/loving kind

but have read enough about others doing it. I tend to agree with . Try one thing, shift attention to cultivating JOY

Interestingly, that's the version of metta I've been sold a lot of the time. It's like vipassana - means what the speaker wants it to mean.
There's a few different ways to do things. The book Franklin suggests has a standard Metta in it but is mostly a shamatha manual.

There are some non-joy Shamatha techniques. That book has some of them, others discuss them as well. Will talk when we talk.
