Unhelpful in what sense? It's an environmental issue in the same way as monocultures, but with more severe ramifications.

I think we *may* need GM tech to feed everyone, especially in some of the scarier global warming scenarios.

We don't fully understand a huge number of things, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're not useful.

Deploying transformative tech we don't understand at this scale is how we created climate change in the first place, if indeed we did.
I'm not saying don't use it; I'm saying reckless deployment can end civilization. It may yet prove to be a bigger mistake than oil/gas.
