I remember myself at 16 being drawn to Buddhism exactly b/c I was a bundle of nerves. But these people are not teens. And many are admired.

More surprised the interpretation of Buddhism is so tinged with it. But as you say, it's often advertised that way.

people go to things like Buddhism because they are suffering, and that often includes being neurotic. Nor does awakening clear all issues.
