Have a book idea I'm quite enthusiastic about, but the problem is it rests on some intuitive assumptions that I... can't quite substantiate.

Either I can start writing and hope this gives me the push I need to examine those assumptions more carefully, or I need to test them first.

I've read enough books to know how often writers go with their original idea, fully aware it's BS but too invested in the work to rewrite it

Alternatively, maybe a traditional beginning-to-end type story is simply a bad fit. There are other structures that might flow better.
