I am talking about people who asked me for help, gave me consent of their own volition. I didn't ask them to, they asked "what do I do?"

When I was just a kid (so a few short years ago) I tried the kind of helping you describe. Learned not to.
Can't I use the word 'help' here?
I wouldn't go to someone else to say "you're a mess" unless they bothered me by choice.
But if they ask for advice... I'll be honest.

And I accept there's a good chance my best contribution is saying "Do X, Y happens. You say you don't want Y to happen, so don't do X".
