people generally have to hit some form of bottom b4 they'll let go of a major story. I was going to die if I didn't change, & I knew it.

people hate cults who cut people off from family & friends, but it's also how Sadhu, Sannyasin, monks, hermits work.

Changing the reality you live in (your stories + identity) is really goddamn hard, and if others are reinforcing it, near impossible.

at a lesser level, this is 1 reason why people leave families and friends and the place they grow up, to be able to be someone else.

I'm not saying such folks don't exist (probably plenty of monastics), but I haven't met them.
