For those of us too disillusioned to return to academia, are there any definitive primers on research methodology (particularly historical)?

I don't have any desire to get a degree, but I have ideas that need some minimal stress testing.
Never been in academia beyond uni; always just used my own. Obv. I'd say complexity based; multidisciplinary with mixed methodology.
