The New Atheist notion that belief in gods is somehow comforting is curiously short-sighted.
Most gods believed in are horrendously evil.

If the alternatives are 1) no gods, permadeath or 2) hellish reincarnations/eternal damnation/serve cruel gods, nr. 1 is clearly comforting.

I don't buy that it's intellectual cowardice to believe in the metaphysical existence of Evil. If it's rational or true... different topic.

In fact, I don't buy anything from people who, in denouncing religious orthodoxy, made their own new orthodoxy from scratch.
