I echo Ben's sentiment in his thread. Had a job a few years back which was plagued with incessant office politics. Why? Managers hired.

When your boss decides if you get promoted or not, a lot of other things go into progression than quality. Hence, backstabbing & politics.

People form cliques, sabotage each other, develop grudges... managers are awful in traditional corporate structures. They are redundancies.

And unlike normal redundancies, where you actually get advantages, this redundancy makes the parts it covers perform worse.

Who watches the watchmen is a problem that has yet to be solved. But, you don't always need watchmen. They're only occasionally needed.
