Meditating exclusively on emotions with a negative valence (a la @cuttingmachine_) definitely helped a bit, but not sufficient in itself.

A lot of insight meditation and mental discipline exercises definitely helped. 'Thinking' (babbling internally) less helps a lot w/fear.

Identifying with a fictional self may or may not increase suffering, but better yet, why care about what bothers you? It's mostly nonsense.

Understand you will die. You can't 'fix' that. This takes a lot of horror out, if understood properly.
