Don't know if it was possible in Portland incident, but generally best to get potential victims away from deranged people

have you seen a detailed account of the incident anywhere? did the women have the opportunity to just run away?

It's definitely the better option, but requires training or aptitude. Most people revert to fight/flight/freeze, even if learned/smart.

Certainly. Military/medical training instills proper attitude. Some basic safety training would serve better than most public schooling.

From knowing those guys, I doubt if they'd have reacted as fast if they hadn't had that. Only a minority have the aptitude.

would you agree that, in general, esp for those without martial arts skills, it is best to get away as quickly as possible?

If someone succeeds, it's almost always through training or heroic character + resourcefulness. The latter group act like that anyway, so...

if I had a daughter, I would make sure she got training in the use of pepper spray

I suspect, esp. for women, the most useful thing is opsec training. Victims are often clueless & naive, sad as it is to say.
