It's definitely the better option, but requires training or aptitude. Most people revert to fight/flight/freeze, even if learned/smart.

Certainly. Military/medical training instills proper attitude. Some basic safety training would serve better than most public schooling.

From knowing those guys, I doubt if they'd have reacted as fast if they hadn't had that. Only a minority have the aptitude.

would you agree that, in general, esp for those without martial arts skills, it is best to get away as quickly as possible?

Everyone should run unless they are skilled and prepared to die. Most of the heroes in these stories are soldiers, quite often now dead.
