Don't know if it was possible in Portland incident, but generally best to get potential victims away from deranged people
Conversation
have you seen a detailed account of the incident anywhere? did the women have the opportunity to just run away?

It's definitely the better option, but requires training or aptitude. Most people revert to fight/flight/freeze, even if learned/smart.

Certainly. Military/medical training instills proper attitude. Some basic safety training would serve better than most public schooling.
A colleague at an old job was assaulted and had his shoulder dislocated, me and several others failed to react in time. Lacked training.

By contrast, two ex-military colleagues immediately pulled the assailant off and wrestled him to the ground. Instant reaction.

From knowing those guys, I doubt if they'd have reacted as fast if they hadn't had that. Only a minority have the aptitude.

would you agree that, in general, esp for those without martial arts skills, it is best to get away as quickly as possible?
