Secular mindfulness peeps (and others) believe Buddhism is primarily an ethical/philosophical framework. Its actual objective is liberation.

... I think we're a far cry from explaining any method like Buddhism, Yoga etc. in anything but a very mundane sense. Even then it's spotty.

I am not saying it necessarily adds anything; rather that it's a valid perspective that works on its own terms. But it's limited.
Hence we get a lot of confusion from the secular types because their perspective *does* explain some aspects, but is woefully incomplete.

I ask because a number of secular mindfulness teachers have a hard-on for assuring students that science backs up their benefit claims

I mean, it does do that - unequivocally. But they can't use that to explain what Buddhism/Yoga/whatever path is *actually* for.
