Mantras and other focal-point techniques seem to work best for this sort of thing. You want to be grounded somewhere, not just aware.

well, the trick is to just do the advaita vedanta 'i am always already enlightened, therefore there is no practice' thing. much less taxing.

But you could be deluding yourself...saying you already are, and yet still suffering - worry, fear, problems, etc. The fiction of the mind.
